How we're spending our leisure time. Everyone has a bit of quiet downtime once in a while. Whether you're sitting quietly at home or trying to relax on a plane or just giving your busy mind and hands a break, it's important to relax. A good way to do that is to read a book, listen to some music or watch a movie or show. See what's caught our attention for the week of May 26th . Italy Holding 5G Spectrum Auction In September, Raising $2.9B

Image
Italy will be holding a 5G spectrum auction in September as part of an initiative meant to prepare the Mediterranean country for the next wireless revolution, communications regulator AGCOM said earlier this week. The auction is expected to see Italy raise at least €2.5 billion ($2.9 billion), with AGCOM already defining basic bidding rules, though the event has yet to see a firm date attached to it. Rome's agency will be organizing the auction by itself, with the move marking the confirmation of the first 5G spectrum auction in all of Europe. Germany is expected to follow Italy's lead and hold its first auction in early 2019, whereas its final conditions will be publicized by the end of the year. Vodafone Italia, Telecom Italia, Fastweb, and  Wind-Tre are all expected to participate in the auction, with TIM likely being the most active bidder. The move should also pay the way for a new category of wireless companies focused solely on operating infrastructure, according to A

Google is testing a horizontal tab switcher for its Chrome Android app

Image
If you are following the Android P development, chances are you are already familiar with most of the changes the new version of the OS brings. One of the most discussed revamps is the new recent apps horizontal switcher. Well, Google is looking to implement the same design concept in its Android Chrome app too. The latest update in Chrome Canary (an unstable version of Chrome with some experimental features) allows you to get a taste of what's coming to the standard version of the browser. The new design arranges the opened tabs side by side instead of overlapping them vertically. Now you can see the full content of the pages in each tab. Swiping up and down will close the tab. Google Chrome horizontal app switcher Incognito tab handling has also been changed - all tabs opened in incognito can be seen by tapping the incognito icon in the upper right corner. Tapping it again will bring you back to your regular tabs. The new horizontal tab switcher will probably be im

Deal: Amazon Fire TV (Certified Refurbished) for $49 – May 2018

Image
Amazon currently has its Fire TV set-top box on sale for just $49.99. Now this is for the certified refurbished model, which is typically priced at $59.99, which makes this a pretty small deal, but still worth jumping on. Since this is a refurbished model, you do still get a warranty, so should anything go wrong, Amazon will take care of everything for you. The Amazon Fire TV runs on the Fire TV platform which brings you a ton of great apps and games available. All of the big names are available, including Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Netflix, HBO NOW, SHOWTIME ANYWHERE, DIRECTV NOW and so much more. It makes it really easy to essentially cut the cord from your cable company and move over to streaming everything. Now the Fire TV is a pendant model, so it's not quite a dongle, but not quite a set-top box. That won't affect the performance though, as you do still get 4K and HDR support here, giving you both a great picture, but also future proofs it for a few years while content

Here's your weekend comments thread with a dose of gratitude

Image
We have Monday off because others gave their lives for it. Monday is Memorial Day in the U.S., and while many of us will be grilling burgers or otherwise enjoying a relaxing long weekend, we should remember why we have it. I'm not one to glorify why we need armed forces. As a child too young to understand, I can remember each evening when several of my mother's friends would join us to watch the news; that's where Walter Cronkite would tell us all how many young men and women were killed in action that day in the Vietnam War. Growing up in an Army town meant there were usually tears and I learned at an early age that even to a civilian, war is hell. But all Americans need to remember that those young men and women, along with countless before them and countless after, gave their lives because they thought they could make ours better. Try to take a moment sometime this weekend to honor them in your own way, then celebrate with friends and family because that&

China To Approve $44B Qualcomm-NXP Deal Next Week: Report

Image
China's antitrust watchdog is set to approve Qualcomm's proposed acquisition of Dutch NXP Semiconductors valued at $44 billion, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing sources with knowledge of the development. Beijing is the last party required to greenlight the deal that would allow Qualcomm to diversify beyond smartphone chips in a much more aggressive manner and was initially announced in late 2016. The prolonged nature of antitrust reviews the tie-up was subjected to already annoyed Qualcomm investors to the point that many of them were prepared to sell the company to Broadcom before President Trump blocked the technology industry 's largest ever proposed takeover initially valued at $121 billion. Beijing is said to have accelerated its review of the NXP deal earlier this month, possibly as a precursor to its trade negotiations with Washington. The report claiming its competition regulator is now prepared to greenlight the merger comes less than a day after ZTE reac

Twitter introduces profile labels for US midterm general election candidates, political campaigning policy

Image
After the 2016 US election, social media services have felt increasing pressure to improve the integrity and quality of information its users discover in their ecosystems. This week, Twitter announced US election labels, which essentially act as enhanced verified badges specially made for candidates running in this year's US midterm general election. The company also announced its "Political Campaigning Policy" to make it easier for users to understand exactly who is backing political ads. These are two steps Twitter is taking to make good on its vow to protect its users from misinformation and bad actors abusing its platform. US election labels Twitter's US election labels will be denoted by a small gray icon of a government building (columns and a dome) and display the office the candidate is running for, the candidate's state, and the candidate's district number when relevant. These labels will be located underneath the candidate's Twitter

Orlando Police Clarify Facial Recognition Software Use

Image
Following recent reports about the City of Orlando's use of Amazon's Rekognition , the Orlando Police Department (OPD) has now held a news conference clarifying that use. That's according to recent reports from local sources, which covered statements made by police Chief John Mina. Speaking with the press, Chief Mina admitted that at least three IRIS surveillance cameras located in downtown Orlando were connected to Rekognition. For those who may not know, Rekognition is effectively an A.I.-driven facial recognition software tool created by Amazon. Among the capabilities of that software is the ability to identify, track, and analyze up to 100 people in a single image. That happens in real time. However, Mina went on to reassure the public that none of those cameras were actively being tracked by the software. More directly, that's because only seven OPD officers are said to have had their images uploaded to the software. However, it's worth pointing out that, ac

Android tablets coming to taxis in New York City

Image
... Android tablets may be dying out in the consumer market , but you might be seeing more of them if you live in New York. Curb Mobility announced on Thursday that its fleet of NYC taxis will soon be updated to include not one, but two Android tablets. 'Dash' will replace the legacy digital meters currently in use by drivers, and 'Ryde' will display media content for passengers. The 'Dash' tablet Curb says the 'Dash' unit includes GPS navigation, live traffic information, and an emergency panic button. It will also help increase drivers' earning potential with fare heatmaps and upfront ride pricing. Meanwhile, Curb has partnered with NBC to show primetime, late night, weather, sports, and national news programs on the 'Ryde' tablet for passengers. Android seems to only be used as an embedded OS in this case, as it doesn't look like much (if any) of the stock interface is visible to the user. Still, if
