U.S. Commerce Department bends over backward to give ZTE a forum to appeal the U.S. export ban

Image
ZTE could be in big trouble of their own doing. The company sold goods and services to Iran and North Korea in 2016, and when caught by the U.S., it agreed to the punishments prescribed by the Commerce Department with a possible seven year U.S. export ban to be put into place if the company failed to comply. Well not only did ZTE allegedly fail to comply, the manufacturer reportedly lied about it and now is banned until 2025 from purchasing U.S. hardware and software . So what kind of phone can ZTE sell without Snapdragon chips and the Android OS, at least until March 2025 when the ban ends? As one of our loyal readers wrote, perhaps Samsung can sell them Exynos chips and Tizen.  While ZTE has said that it will appeal the ruling , the question is, to whom? According to the Wall Street Journal , the company has no "administrative appeal rights under agency regulations." But don't ever say that the Commerce Department doesn't have a

Flickr has been acquired by photo-sharing service SmugMug

Image
... Flickr announced yesterday that it's entered into an agreement to be acquired from Oath Inc. by photo-sharing and image hosting platform SmugMug. Flickr says  there are currently no plans to change its service following the acquisition. You may not be familiar with SmugMug, but it's actually been around since 2002—longer than Flickr, which came online in 2004. SmugMug's service is subscription-based, offering paid plans for individuals and businesses. While SmugMug doesn't offer any free plans, Flickr's popular ad-supported service will remain intact. VIDEO In an interview , SmugMug CEO Don MacAskill told USA Today that he plans to maintain Flickr as its own standalone platform, and even hopes to build on it—although he didn't seem set on the specifics of doing so. "I don't know what the future holds. This is a new model for me," he said. Financial details of the acquisition haven't been disclosed.

AT&T and Verizon are under investigation for colluding to let eSIM-equipped phones remain locked to their network

Image
The US Department of Justice is investigating AT&T and Verizon for allegedly colluding with the GSMA to influence eSIM standards so as not to threaten their dominance over the US consumer market. The investigation was opened five months ago after Apple and an unnamed wireless carrier complained to the DOJ, according to  Reuters . eSIM, short for embedded SIM, is a new format of the ubiquitous SIM cards that are used in phones and other mobile devices to securely identify and authenticate a user on a carrier's network. eSIMs are non-removable chips that are embedded into a device and allow consumers to switch networks through software settings instead of having to physically remove and insert a small piece of plastic into their device. Despite eSIM's obvious advantages, it has yet to achieve any significant presence in the market, with only a few notable devices having adopted it so far, such as Google's Pixel 2 and the Apple Watch 3. SIM cards, which wer

Huawei Mate 10 Pro review

Image
When it comes to the Huawei brand we're reminded of the way we felt for HTC about a decade back. In other words, we love the products and think they deserve to spend more time under the spotlight. We do what we can to help evangelize the brand. After initially trickling into the Android smartphone market with the Ascend series roughly five years ago, Huawei has gone on to rebrand it under the Mate line. In that time it has also partnered with Google for 2015's Nexus 6P and introduced Honor as a subsidiary independent brand in China. Today the situation is a little different for Huawei. Its last few generations of phones have everything it takes to compete on the flagship battleground. Moreover, it often beats the likes of LG and Samsung with more affordable pricing. Things, on paper, sound awesome, and each new device is eagerly greeted by Android fans. In practice, though, things could be better for Huawei in the United States . In January it was literally days away

A new "Your People" training feature for Assistant is already visible (but not live), while strings reveal work on custom Routines, Lens, Smart Displays, and more. Nintendo Switch About APK Insight : In this 'APK Insight' post, we've decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we're able to see various lines of code within that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. We'll try to enable those that are closer to being finished, however, to show you how they'll look in the case that they do ship. With that in mind, read on. Grilling up some weekend comments

Image
Weekends were made for having fun and relaxing or both if you can find a way to do it. This weekend is the first weekend in a while where I can sit back and say "I ain't doin' sh*t all day" and I'm loving it. Somehow there always ends up being something that needs done (and I guess the weekend isn't over just yet so I probably jinxed myself) even when I plan to do a whole lot of nothing but sit somewhere warm with something cold to drink in my hands. Not this weekend. I have the house to myself and my phone is in do not disturb mode until Monday morning while I watch the world go by through the lovely view this lawn chair gives me. My wife isn't having as much fun, unfortunately. She's off on a weekend training thing for her job and enjoying the lovely sights and sounds of Newark, New Jersey until Sunday night. I've never had the pleasure of visiting Newark myself, though I have buzzed through the airport for a quick commuter connec

12 Fortnite-style games for Android you can play right now

Image
Fortnite may not yet be available on Android, but that doesn't mean you can't get into some hectic battle royale gameplay on the OS. A ton of similar games have released on the Play Store in the last few months, so I figured why not round up all of the better titles into one post so our readers can see what their options are while patiently waiting for the official Fortnite releases. So without further ado, here are 12 Fortnite-style games for Android that you can play right now. PUBG MOBILE PUBG Mobile  may still be a work in progress, but what it has to offer so far results in a very playable battle royale game for Android. One could argue the experience is even better than PC thanks to a smoother framerate and no cost to play. There are still plenty of expensive in-app purchases, but it would seem the currency you purchase with them is used mainly for cosmetic items. So if you are not too worried about theming your character, you should have no issues playin
