Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding Wins Emmy Award for High Efficiency Video Coding

You’ve probably heard of Ultra-High Definition (UHD) as the way to enjoy visual content in at least four times the detail of Full High Definition (FHD). But it requires some important work behind the scenes for this type of technology to be standardized and rolled out across multiple devices.   For its effectiveness in developing High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), a collective group called the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) recently received, on October 25, the Primetime Emmy Engineering Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.   HEVC is a common standard that enables efficient delivery of UHD content over multiple distribution channels. Representatives from various companies and academic institutions, including Samsung Electronics, Sony, Microsoft and Qualcomm, are part of the JCT-VC, in addition to standards organizations including the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC),

SDC 2017: Our Commitment to Helping Kids Gain Digital Literacy

Image
Whether you call them Digital Natives or the Internet Generation, today’s kids and teenagers are assumed to be fluent when it comes to digital tools. It’s true, they are not shy using tablets and smartphones, but that falls short of attaining true digital literacy: understanding how our digital world works and using digital tools to create amazing new technologies. However, teaching kids 21 st century skills is absolutely vital – both for society as a whole and for companies like Samsung, who need to recruit the talent that helps develop the innovation of tomorrow. That’s why we invited young people - from first-graders all the way to college age - to join us last week at the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2017 in San Francisco. We wanted to showcase some of the educational opportunities that can help children gain true digital literacy, and demonstrate Samsung’s passion for giving young people the future-proof skills they need – not just for the jobs market, but also to expres

Samsung India begins R&D work on 5G technology

Image
Samsung has been playing a major role in the development of 5G technology. The company recently conducted its first 5G fixed wireless access trial in the United Kingdom. It has also inked agreements to deliver the first multi-vendor 5G trials with Verizon and Cisco. Samsung has now revealed that research and development work on 5G technology has begun at its R&D center in India. Dipesh Shah, the managing director of the Samsung R&D Institute in Bengaluru, has confirmed that the company has started work on 5G technology at the facility. The facility in Bengaluru is Samsung’s largest research and development center outside South Korea. Samsung India And 5G Samsung’s R&D center in Bengaluru performs two major roles. It develops features to address the needs of Indian consumers. Features like S-Bike were developed here. The center’s other role is to work on products and services with a global impact. This may not be widely known but the final part of development for Bix

SoundAssistant is now compatible with the Galaxy Note 8

Image
Samsung has updated its SoundAssistant application with support for the Galaxy Note 8 . The upgrade also bundles compatibility for a number of new features and interface improvements, which have been built for the latest version of the firm’s Experience—formerly known as TouchWiz—user interface (8.5). Among the new additions is the facility to alter the volume of an individual application and change the increments that volume is increased/decreased. You’ll also notice the option to share equalizer settings, so if you find a nice balance you can send it to a friend to use on their handset. We’d recommend installing the update from the Play Store The update is available to download from both Galaxy Apps and the Play Store starting today. We’d recommend grabbing it from the latter though, as it’s often marginally quicker to install an upgrade from Google’s offering than it is from Samsung’s. But that’s just our two cents. Samsung’s latest incentive to use Samsung Pay benefits children in need

Samsung will donate a school meal to a child in need every time you use its mobile payment platform— Samsung Pay —instead of an Oyster on Transport for London (TfL) and National Rail services, which covers the DLR, London Underground, London Overground and London River Bus. There’s a caveat, though. To ensure a meal is donated, you’ll need to use a Mastercard-issued credit or debit card as your preferred payment for travel and seeing as most financial institutions are making the push towards Visa Credit, that may be easier said than done. Samsung Pay launched in the UK in May Samsung Pay has been available in the United Kingdom since May. It currently supports a number of the region’s leading banks, including First Direct, HSBC and M&S Bank; however, a couple of big names are still missing from the list (cough, cough, Barclays, Lloyds, cough). The World Food Day promotion expires on Monday, November 6. The post Samsung’s latest incentive to use Samsung Pay benefits children i

T-Mobile Galaxy J7 Android 7.1.1 Nougat update released

We reported recently that the Galaxy J7 might soon receive the Nougat update . The handset was spotted at the Wi-Fi Alliance running a Nougat build. It was a big indication that the company was planning on rolling out the update soon. T-Mobile has now started rolling out the Android 7.1.1 Nougat update for the Galaxy J7. It’s one of the few devices that Samsung has updated straight to version 7.1.1 from Marshmallow. T-Mobile Galaxy J7 Android 7.1.1 Nougat Update T-Mobile has started rolling out the Nougat update for the Galaxy J7 over-the-air. However, the company’s support document for this handset is all over the place. It assigns version number Android 6.0.1, Android 7.0 and Android 7.1.1 to one single firmware version, J700TUVU3BQI5 . This is obviously not possible. Clearly, there are clerical issues with the document. That doesn’t mean the T-Mobile Galaxy J7 Android 7.1.1 Nougat update isn’t rolling out. Those who own this handset on T-Mobile will soon receive an update notif

Samsung to release the Android 8.0 Oreo update in Turkey in early 2018

Image
Samsung’s Turkish subsidiary is aiming to start rolling out the much-anticipated Android 8.0 Oreo update in Turkey at the beginning of 2018, according to a post published on Guncelmiyiz , the firm’s local update portal. While we don’t know exactly what smartphones—and tablets—will receive the upgrade in the region, it’s safe to assume that the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 will be among the first, closely followed by the Galaxy S7. Related:  These Galaxy devices will be updated to Android 8.0 Oreo As this is Samsung we’re talking about, we wouldn’t recommend fixating on the early 2018 release date, but nevertheless, having confirmation it’s actively developing the firmware for use on its devices is certainly reassuring. For those unaware, Android 8.0 Oreo bundles a number of long-awaited features, including support for Program-in-Picture (PiP), notification channels, adaptive icons and circular emoji, as well as a number of bug fixes. Samsung Spain hands out 200 free Galaxy Note 8 units on a plane

Image
Samsung’s reputation took a hit because of the Galaxy Note 7 . The handset’s faulty battery made it a fire risk so it was quickly banned from airplanes. The airlines actually started making announcements that the Galaxy Note 7 was not allowed in the cabin. The company bounced back with the Galaxy Note 8 . The great response it has received for the new handset shows that the Note faithful are loyal to this lineup. Samsung Spain decided to remind people of last year’s unfortunate events and highlight how the Galaxy Note 8 has truly been the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. It handed out free Galaxy Note 8 units to 200 unsuspecting passengers on a domestic flight in Spain. Free Galaxy Note 8 Units Passengers on a late night Iberia flight from Madrid to A Coruña, Galicia were probably not expecting to get a free gift that cost more than their ticket. This surprise move came after Iberia started promoting the Galaxy Note 8. There were 200 passengers on that flight and all o

Samsung doesn’t think OLED displays are suitable for TVs

Image
If you’re waiting for Samsung to launch an OLED TV, you might have to keep waiting. The company has said that it doesn’t think that OLED displays are suitable for TVs. That’s not something that its rival LG agrees with as it continues to churn out great OLED TVs. Samsung launched its QLED TVs earlier this year and positioned them as an alternative to OLED TVs. The two technologies are completely different. Samsung claims that the performance of QLED panels is better than OLED panels. OLED Displays For TVs Samsung says that OLED displays are good for devices that have shorter life expectancies such as smartphones. That’s because OLED panels have screen burn-in or image retention issues. It says that the case is different for TVs and monitor that are normally used for longer periods. Comparing OLED panels with fruit juice that oxidizes with time, Samsung said that “The reason OLED TVs have image retentions is because they are made of organic materials.” That’s not a comparison you

Galaxy S6 edge update brings October security patch

Samsung is now rolling out a new Galaxy S6 edge update that brings the October security patch. The company detailed the latest security maintenance release a couple of weeks back. It has since been released for several devices. Samsung has already released the October security patch for devices like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 . Now, it’s the Galaxy S6 edge’s turn. The October security patch is now being rolled out for the Galaxy S6 edge (SM-G925F) in the United Kingdom. Galaxy S6 edge Update Samsung has rolled out this Galaxy S6 edge firmware in the United Kingdom. Firmware version G925FXXU5EQI8 is now being distributed over-the-air. Galaxy S6 edge owners should soon receive an update notification on their handset if they haven’t already. This Galaxy S6 edge update has only been released in the United Kingdom so far. It’s only a matter of time before it’s rolled out in other markets as well. It shouldn’t take more than a few days for this to happen now. There are fixes

Samsung Electronics Partners with TÜV SÜD to Introduce Collaborative Testing Program for its Automotive LED Components

Image
Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced digital component solutions, and TÜV SÜD, a global technical services provider of quality, safety and sustainability solutions, today announced that the companies have developed a new testing program for Samsung’s automotive LED components. A ceremony was held earlier today at the headquarters of TÜV SÜD Korea in Seoul, Korea, to unveil the new testing program.   The agreement between the two companies marks the first time in the industry that an automotive LED component manufacturer has partnered with a globally-recognized testing and certification company to test the quality, performance and reliability of automotive LED components. Automotive LED component manufacturers are generally required to submit in-house testing results to supply their products to OEMs.   With TÜV SÜD’s world-class verification processes, Samsung will be able to offer an exceptionally high degree of validation and technical assurance for its automotive LED

Seven reasons why Tizen 3.0 is great for Samsung smartwatches

Image
Last Friday, we received the Samsung Gear Sport, which was announced at IFA earlier this year. The Gear Sport runs Tizen 3.0 out of the box, and it is expected that Samsung will bring the upgrade to the Gear S3 Frontier and Gear S3 Classic as well. What does Tizen 3.0 bring to the table? We’ve come across a few notable new features and improvements, and we’ve listed the major ones below. Watch Only mode Watch Only is a new feature on Tizen 3.0. When you activate Watch Only mode, the smartwatch will only show you the watch face and disable all other functions, including notifications. This means you can use it as a regular watch, and the battery will also last much longer. You’ll lose all of the smart functionality, but Watch Only mode will be great for the times you just need a timepiece to, well, tell the time. Bezel wake-up Moving the bezel ring on Samsung’s watches turns on the screen, and while this can be handy for some, it can be annoying if you’re sleeping or in a situat

Android 7.1.1 Nougat update now arriving on the Galaxy J5 (2016) in Europe

Image
The Galaxy J5 (2016) is Samsung’s latest smartphone to receive the Android 7.1.1 update in Europe. The upgrade, which has started making the rounds in Poland, transports all of the features included in Nougat, as well as the tweaks bundled in Experience 8.5, the latest version of the firm’s user interface. So what does Experience 8.5 bring to the table? Well, aside from the integration of Samsung Cloud, a revamped Device Manager application and shutter button zooming for the Camera client, not a great deal. It does, however, feel a lot smoother than the previous build, Experience 8.1, that debuted on the Galaxy S8. Screenshots: Nougat with Samsung Experience UX on the Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 (2016) Seeing as the update is currently rolling out in Poland, it shouldn’t be long until it starts reaching variants in other countries in Europe. We’re guessing it’ll arrive in Germany and the United Kingdom next, before eventually touching down in North America following a fairly lengthy

Galaxy Note 8 October security patch released

October is almost over and yet there are still many Samsung handsets out there that haven’t received the latest security update. Samsung has finally started rolling out the Galaxy Note 8 October security patch today. The company detailed the latest security maintenance release for Android device three weeks ago. It has since been released for a handful of devices, including the Galaxy S8 . Galaxy Note 8 October Security Patch The Galaxy Note 8 October security patch is now being rolled out in China and Hong Kong. Samsung has released the firmware update for Galaxy Note 8 units bearing model numbers SM-N9508 and SM-N9500 . There are no reports so far of this update being released in other markets. Galaxy S9 could come with a front-facing fingerprint reader

Image
The upcoming Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ could feature a front-facing fingerprint scanner to combat criticism the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 received, suggests a patent Samsung filed for with KIPRIS, South Korea’s trademarking organization. If the information included in the patent documentation is accurate, the firm is planning on building a small recess (think: Essential Phone) into the bottom of the Galaxy S9 that will house a small super-fast fingerprint reader. We’re not sure a recess is the best route to go down—and it doesn’t look like our readers do, either. According to a poll we ran last month, the majority of voters would hate to see a notch à la iPhone X on board Samsung’s next flagship. Galaxy S9 should sport a Snapdragon 845 processor The Galaxy S9 is expected to sport the same 5.8-inch Infinity Display as the Galaxy S8, while the Galaxy S9+ should pack an identical 6.2-inch Infinity Display to the Galaxy S8+. They’re both tipped to sport a Snapdragon 845 CPU and 6GB

Samsung ranked as the most valuable brand in South Korea

Valuation and strategy consultant Brand Finance has released its list of the top 50 most valuable brands in South Korea. Samsung has been ranked as the most valuable and powerful brand in the country , unsurprisingly. The firm ranks the brands for its Brand Finance South Korea 50 league table by taking into account a variety of factors. It looks at the marketing investment, sustainability and margins, familiarity, preference and also determines the proportion of the company’s revenue that’s contributed by its brand. Most Valuable Brand In South Korea Brand Finance analysts have ranked Samsung at the very top of the list. The company’s brand value is up 12 percent of $51.4 billion, according to the firm. That’s almost five times the value of the second most valuable brand on the list. Car manufacturer Hyundai is the country’s second most valuable brand. Its brand value has been estimated at $8.8 billion, a 4 percent increase from the previous year. Samsung Fire & Marine is the

Samsung to announce a three-year buyback plan next week

Image
Samsung is preparing to announce a three-year plan to buy back shares next week, reports The Korea Herald . The initiative can be considered an extension to the $10 billion buyback program it launched in 2015, which had a positive effect on its price per share. Last year, the firm said it would spend 50 percent of its 22.4 trillion won ($19 billion) net profit to increase its share value and return the benefits to its investors—and that’s exactly what it did, paying out nearly 4 trillion won ($3.5 billion) worth of cash dividends and buying 7.2 trillion won ($6.3 billion) worth of shares back. To keep the ratio the same as last year, Samsung has to spend 13 trillion won buying back shares by January When Samsung reveals its three-year plan next week, alongside details surrounding its third-quarter profit and plans for cash dividends for 2018-2020, it’s expected to be on a much larger scale, in accordance with its record profit for 2017, with many market analysts expecting its net

Apple and Samsung to return to the courtroom for a patent damages retrial

Judge Lucy Koh of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California determined on Sunday that Apple and Samsung will return to the courtroom to battle a retrial of their famous design patent damages case, which is exactly what the South Korean company has been fighting for. Samsung had originally, as noted by Foss Patents , asked Judge Koh for a retrial of its previous case against Apple, to which she denied, then went on to convince the Supreme Court that the terms of its previous ruling were incorrect, later resulting in her deciding that a retrial is on the cards. Apple and Samsung have until Wednesday, October 25 to propose a case schedule and a retrial date; however, there’s a chance, albeit a small one, the conglomerates will never make it into the courtroom, as both parties have the option to settle the dispute outside of the legal system. Apple will be hoping for a per-device ruling It’s unlikely it will go down that route, though. The Supreme Court

Samsung CEO’s replacement could be selected this week

Samsung Electronics CEO and Vice Chairman Kwon Oh-hyun announced recently that he was stepping down amid an “unprecedented crisis.” He has been with the company for more than 30 years. He was essentially serving as the de facto head after Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong was imprisoned earlier this year. According to a new report, Samsung might select the successor to the CEO as early as this week. An early selection would mean that the transition would be easier when Kwon vacates his post early next year. Samsung CEO’s Replacement Samsung Electronics will have to pick a successor to Samsung CEO Kwon Oh-hyun as he has already made his plans to retire public. Samsung will now be looking to appoint a new head of the device and display business divisions that are currently under Kwon. Candidates that are reportedly being considered for this position include the head of Samsung’s medical equipment business Jun Dong-soo, Samsung Display senior adviser Park Dong-gun and the head of Samsung Ad

Samsung could be working on a Dual Wireless Charging Pad

Samsung has been approved a patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a Dual Wireless Charging Pad that will—presumably—work in a similar way to the one Apple announced alongside the iPhone X back in September, allowing users to charge their Galaxy- and Gear-branded products simultaneously. The firm’s Dual Wireless Charging Pad takes advantage of both inductive and resonate modes of wireless charging, which are compliant with the Qi standard, reports Patently Mobile , meaning there shouldn’t be a single Qi-compatible smartphone, tablet or wearable on the market it won’t be able to charge. Based on the sketches included in the patent filing, the science behind the Dual Wireless Charging Pad is actually pretty simple. There appear to be two coils housed within the unit; both of them support inductive and resonate charging—and the Pad can automatically switch between them when it sees fit. Dual Wireless Charging Pad to launch alongside the Galaxy S9? It’s worth mentioni

T-Mobile Galaxy S8 Active makes its FCC stop

It’s no longer a secret that the Galaxy S8 Active will soon be making its way to T-Mobile. AT&T is going to lose its exclusivity over Samsung’s “Active” lineup this year. Even Samsung hinted as much when it launched the Galaxy S8 Active on T-Mobile. The company said at that time that the device would be exclusive to AT&T for a “limited time.” Much has already been said and written about the Galaxy S8 Active for T-Mobile. Renders of the device were recently leaked online as well. Now, the T-Mobile Galaxy S8 Active has been spotted at the FCC. T-Mobile Galaxy S8 Active The Galaxy S8 Active bearing model number SM-G892U has been spotted in the FCC database. The handset is listed as having support for LTE Band 71, the same band that T-Mobile started deploying recently. This particular model of the Galaxy S8 Active also has support for T-Mobile’s other LTE bands, such as Band 66. The FCC filing doesn’t mention T-Mobile by name. Then again, the filings never reveal such precise

TV Market Insights: Large Screen, UHD, and Convenience

Image
In Seoul, Korea, Samsung Electronics recently invited media to discuss key trends and the outlook for the global TV market, as well as share regarding the company’s business direction.   Among the key trends discussed included the rapidly increasing demand for UHD quality large screen TVs, as well as ongoing consumer pain points related to TV convenience.     Demand for Large Screen UHD TVs   According to market research firms GfK and NPD, global market revenue for big screen TVs, larger than 55 inch, occupied over 40 percent between January and August 2017. In North America, 60 percent of TV sales were for big screen TVs larger than 55 inch, with 30 percent for TVs larger than 60 inch.   Related to TV resolution, the market is also experiencing a shift from FHD to UHD. Between January and August of this year, according to GfK and NPD, revenues for UHD TVs accounted for over 50 percent of the global TV market, and 60 to 70 percent in North America, Europe and Korea.     De

New Chromebook Pro from Samsung might get a specs bump

Image
Samsung announced the Chromebook Plus and Chromebook Pro back at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in January. The company delayed the latter’s release by several months due to issues with Android app compatibility. The Chromebook Pro was finally released on May 28 . According to a report, there’s a new Chromebook Pro from Samsung in the pipeline. It’s said to be a “highly-upgraded” version, meaning that it’s likely going to get a specs bump. New Chromebook Pro The Chromebook Pro currently features an Intel Core m3 processor with 4GB of RAM. The report claims that the new Chromebook Pro will feature an Intel Core m7 processor with 16GB of RAM. This specs bump should, at least in theory, put the performance figures on par with Google’s latest high-end Pixelbook. Whether or not there will be any design changes remains to be seen. Existing features like the 360-degree rotating touchscreen display, support for a digitized Pen and Android apps are likely to be retained. The specs

Samsung TV sales expected to provide earnings boost

Industry sources believe that Samsung TV sales are going to provide the company with an earnings boost. The demand for its high-end TV products remains strong which will enable the company to bring in more revenue from its TV business. The company’s QLED TVs are said to be driving demand for Samsung’s high-end TV products. The company unveiled them earlier this year before releasing the lineup in April. They are estimated to account for almost 10 percent of Samsung’s overall TV shipments. Samsung TV Sales According to a report out of South Korea, it’s expected that Samsung’s QLED TVs will account for 10 percent of its entire TV shipments. This raises hopes that Samsung’s earnings from its TV business will improve in the near future. It’s also claimed that more than half of QLED TV sales are accounted for by large-sized models with a screen size of 65-inch or more. This shows that many customers aren’t shying away from spending big money on a new TV. Industry tracker GfK’s data sho

Samsung has reportedly invested in Chinese AI developer DeePhi Tech

Artificial intelligence is going to power a lot of features and services on our mobile devices in the years to come. The AI market is certainly heating up and major tech companies are trying to get a leg up on the competition. To this end, Samsung has reportedly made a significant investment in DeePhi Tech, an artificial intelligence technology startup based in China. The Chinese government has recently been focusing on fostering homegrown artificial intelligence technology firms. Some people suggest that Samsung made the investment out of political considerations and not necessarily over the company’s technological prowess. This isn’t the first investment of its kind by Samsung. The company invested $30 million in UK-based AI startup Graphcore not too long ago. DeePhi Tech And Samsung DeePhi Tech has founded last year. It’s a deep learning solution developer that caught the attention of companies like Samsung with its neural network compression technology and hardware architectur
