Samsung Galaxy A8+ review: Throwing down the gauntlet

Image
The Galaxy A8+ is Samsung's most ambitious showing in the mid-range segment, but that may not be enough.Samsung is in a tough spot in India. The South Korean manufacturer was virtually unchallenged in the country for the last five years, allowing it to build a commanding lead in the handset segment. The Note 7 was the only blip in an otherwise smooth-sailing ship, but with the device never actually making its debut in the country, Samsung didn't have to deal with a lengthy recall. As a result, Samsung was able dictate the segments it competed in. Even now, the Galaxy S8 and the Note 8 are the only real alternatives to the iPhone for those looking to pick up a high-end phone in India, and devices in the budget Galaxy J series continue to sell in the tens of millions of units. However, there has been a tectonic shift in the Indian handset segment in the last 12 months. Samsung Galaxy Note 8: The best smart phone on the market

Image
If you follow my Facebook page, you will know I love taking photos and filming while out and about in Christchurch, capturing and documenting the city’s rebuild.Even when I’m travelling overseas and on holiday, I never miss the opportunity to film, whether it’s the flash hotel or the shopping experience. I take my phone with me everywhere I go, just in case there’s something incredible to film. My Facebook followers are always asking me what camera I use and I get the feeling they’re expecting me to talk about some unobtainable broadcast camera used by television networks.  But no, it’s actually my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and in my opinion, it’s the best smart phone on the market if you’re serious about producing professional video content. And no, I’m not getting paid to say this! The advancement in mobile imaging for this phone is stunning and if you know how to frame videos correctly, the quality of the video gives any television broadcast camera a run for its money. Its portrait-styl…

Obviously, the names showing up in an Oreo beta for the Note 8 hints at the possibility that these features could arrive for older phones as well, but we’ll probably see them debut first on the S9 and S9+.The first big feature revealed here is “Intelligent Scan.” Clearly as a means to compete with Apple’s Face ID, this feature uses a combination of Samsung’s iris scanner and its facial recognition technology. It does this to “improve accuracy and security even in low or very bright light.”Lighting is one area Samsung’…

New renders show Samsung's boring new Galaxy S9 will still be beautiful

Image
It’s extremely rare that a smartphone design holds up for more than a year. That’s one of many reasons why it’s so puzzling that Apple has used almost the exact same iPhone design for four consecutive years. Four years! Apple’s latest-generation iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were released in 2017 and they look nearly identical to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus that launched all the way back in 2014. Luckily, Apple also released the iPhone X last year, complete with a design overhaul for Apple fans who couldn’t stomach coughing up cash for yet another iPhone that looks the same.Across the pond in South Korea, Samsung is also preparing to release brand new flagship smartphones that look almost exactly like the flagship smartphones the company launched last year. Luckily, Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have two things going for them: Samsung’s Galaxy S8 design is only one year old at this point, and it also still happens to be one of the most stunning smartphone designs in the world.Acc…
