CAD schematics highlight the miniscule design changes for the Galaxy S9

Image
The Galaxy S9 will be a generation for refinement rather than revolution. The exterior design of the new phones has barely changed – comparing CAD schematics for both makes it plain to see. For the most part, the S9 phones – both the small one and the Galaxy S9+ – will be differ by fractions of a millimeter compared to the S8 generation. The biggest change seems to be that the S9+ model will be 1.7mm shorter than its predecessor (we've included a table with dimensions at the bottom). The screen position, even the thickness of the earpiece have been nudged ever so slightly. There will be one major change, however, a change for the better. The fingerprint reader on both phones is now positioned below the camera (much easier to reach) and, of course, the Galaxy S9+ will have a dual camera. Despite no apparent change in the sensor array above the screen, the Galaxy S9 will reportedly have IntelligentScan - a combination of facial and iris scanning. It remains to be seen if th

Samsung provides more evidence the foldable Galaxy X could arrive this year

Image
Samsung has been quite open about its plans to launch a foldable phone as soon as possible, and some rumors even point to a launch by the end of 2018 . That might sound optimistic, but even Samsung’s latest financial results suggest that's not out of the question. At the very least, production of the phone – currently known as the Samsung Galaxy X – might well start this year, as in its Q4 2017 earnings statement Samsung has mentioned that in 2018 its display panel business will "reinforce its competencies in new applications such as foldable [displays]." That doesn't necessarily mean the handset will be ready to launch this year, but it's possible, and it sounds like it would be by 2019 at the very least. A foldable future In fact, in the same statement Samsung notes that "as for the Mobile business, Samsung will continue its efforts to differentiate its smartphones by adopting cutting-edge technologies, such as foldable OLED displays." Samsung announces first ever stock split to boost shareholder value

Many Samsung investors had been calling on the company to boost shareholder returns so the company launched its Shareholder Value Enhancement Program in 2015. Since then, it has given out billions in dividends and spent billions on buying back shares to cancel them. The company confirmed in 2016 that it was thinking about a stock split . The company’s board has approved a 50:1 stock split today as Samsung posted record profits for the final quarter of last year. It says that this decision was taken after many requests for a stock split were received based on the view that a high share price was keeping away retail investors. Making it easier for retail investors to purchase stock Samsung Electronics’ stock price closed at 2,495,000 won today which is roughly $2,342 per single share. Assuming that the Korean stock exchange has set a 10 share lot size for Samsung Electronics, it would mean that anyone willing to buy shares in the company must have at least $23,420 to buy a single lot

Samsung has emerged as the world’s largest chipmaker, dethrones Intel

Samsung became the world’s most profitable tech company in the second quarter of last year but that wasn’t the only record it broke. It also ended Intel’s 24-year reign as the largest semiconductor-based chipmaker in the world. Samsung posted higher revenue and operating profits compared to Intel during Q2 2017. That wasn’t a one-time thing. Samsung’s semiconductor business has seen a terrific boom in the past year and that has helped the company close out 2017 not only with record profits, but properly dethroning Intel as well. Samsung is now the largest chipmaker in the world by revenue. Intel brought this on itself It’s not like Intel had a bad year in 2017. Sales were up six percent and the company posted a healthy growth in revenues, bringing in $62.8 billion last year but it wasn’t enough to match Samsung. The Korean giant revealed in its Q4 and year-end earnings result today that its semiconductor division generated $69.1 billion in revenues last year. You might be wonder

Samsung trademarks ‘Uhssup’ for possibly its own messaging app

Samsung is primarily a hardware company, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t tried its hand at services. Back in 2014, Samsung launched its Milk music streaming service in select markets, only to shut it down a few years later . With rivals like Apple making a good chunk of money from services, it is expected that Samsung would want to replicate the success. Being the largest smartphone vendor in the world gives Samsung an enviable opportunity to pre-load its services on its devices. Samsung’s own messaging app? Samsung has filed a trademark application with the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) for the brand name ‘Uhssup’ on January 26, 2018. The trademark application describes it as a mobile app that allows for sharing real-time locations of users and communicating with friends. None of this sounds any different from what other popular messaging apps already offer. So, it is not yet clear what Samsung’s rationale is behind this service if it’s intended for public r

Samsung sets record Q4 profits ahead of Galaxy S9 launch

Image
As Bloomberg noted, Samsung is now the biggest chipmaker by revenue, reporting $69 billion in chip sales for the year, larger than Intel's $63 billion. As for the display division, one of the biggest reasons why it did well in Q4 2017 is Apple, whose exclusive orders for the X's OLED displays helped Samsung offset the rising Korean won. It's been a while since we've seen the company's mobile division become its top earner , and that definitely didn't happen in the fourth quarter. Samsung's mobile biz earnings were affected by the hike in marketing costs over the holidays, and the division's operating profit was down YOY from $2.3 billion in Q4 2016 to around $2.25 billion in Q4 2017. While Samsung saw a decrease in shipments for its low-end phones, its Galaxy Note 8 shipments were up from the previous quarter. The chaebol, expecting a "growing replacement demand for premium smartphones," believes its mobile division will bounce back onc

Galaxy S8 Tip: Prepare your phone for the Android 8.0 Oreo update

Image
It’s only a matter of time before Samsung starts rolling out the official Android 8.0 Oreo update to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, with the beta program having ended in every country where it was made available. Samsung's most exciting flagship phone of 2018 won't be the Galaxy S9 or Note 9

Image
Samsung will soon take the wraps off of its next big worst-kept-secret, the Galaxy S9. Thanks to a large number of leaks we have a more than a decent idea of what this Galaxy S8 lookalike will have to offer. The Galaxy Note 9 already sounds like the more exciting flagship this year, according to early rumors. The phone may pack an even better AI chip, as well as a fingerprint sensor under the display. But the most exciting new flagship of 2018 might be something entirely different. For the first time ever, Samsung may have three distinct high-end mobile devices in stores this year. The third handset may be the Galaxy X, that mythical foldable smartphone that keeps popping up in a plethora of reports and patent sightings. Samsung mobile chief DJ Koh said only a few weeks ago at CES that the Galaxy X may launch in late 2018 in a best-case scenario. Other reports said at the time that the phone may be postponed to early 2019. The phone was purportedly demoed behind closed doors at

iPhone X vs Galaxy Note 8 – Apple & Samsung's Big Boys Take The Gloves Off

Image
The Samsung Galaxy S9 is due to land fairly soon; the end of February to be precise, after which it'll hit sales in mid-March. Until then, however, Apple's iPhone X, which only launched relatively recently in September 2017, has a handful of major Android competitors. Chief amongst them are Samsung's 2017 flagship devices; the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and the Galaxy Note 8, which launched latest of the three, but shares a lot of similar tech and features. Apple and Samsung pretty much rule the smartphone space. No two ways about it, the duo have been commanding the lion's share of the market for years now. Some years Samsung is up, and sometimes Apple is on top instead; and below these two things are constantly shifting. Right now, Huawei is coming up in third place. Samsung and Apple have a very long-standing rivalry and are constantly trying to out-do each other. In the world of smartphones, no two manufacturers are locked in a never-ending battle against each oth

Leaked Samsung Galaxy S9 Images Offer a Glimpse of Smartphone We've just been given our best look at the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus to date, with a full-frontal shot of each handset popping up online. The image was tweeted by renowned leaker @evleaks, who posted the message "These are the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+" alongside the shot. Evan Blass -- the man behind the @evleaks handle -- has an excellent track record with these sort of things, which gives this particular leak a good level of gravitas. However, it's not totally convincing. Incremental's the name, minor updates the game What you'll notice right away is the Galaxy S9 duo look almost identical to the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus devices they're set to replace. The arrangement of cameras and sensors in the bezel above the displays appear to match the layout on the S8, while the expansive 18.5:9 aspect ratio Infinity Displays also feature.
