Spotify launches standalone app ‘Stations’ for free playlist listening

Image
Spotify is well known for its wide variety of playlists, but now the company has launched a new, standalone app that relies solely on the curated content. Late on Tuesday, Spotify officially launched an app called Stations, as was first reported by Variety . The app is currently an Android exclusive and, at least at the time of publication, appears to still only be available in Australia. For those who can try Stations, it’s designed around big font and individual playlists, all designed to build around your preferences without any real user interaction beyond select the playlist. It also touts the fact that users don’t need to search for anything, or type into the app at all. The music options should adapt to the user’s listening patterns as well. It is a free app and doesn’t require a Spotify Premium subscription to access. However, it doesn’t look like users can skip songs while they’re listening, even if they are a Premium subscriber. Spotify’s own description of the app in

US Cellular Drops Price of Prepaid Unlimited Plan From $70 to $55

Image
US Cellular announced today that it has dropped the price of its prepaid unlimited data plan from $70 per month to $55. In addition to the price change, a new 3GB-$40 prepaid plan has joined the party as well. For those not familiar, US Cellular offers unlimited data on this prepaid plan, but it is capped at 1.5Mbps speeds for the first 15GB. After that, the speeds drop to 2G for the rest of the billing cycle. With this new 3GB plan, you should see decent speeds for the first 3GB, but its speeds also drop to 2G after that first 3GB. For a limited time, if you sign-up for the new $55 and $40 plans, US Cellular will give you a free Samsung J3 or Moto E4 Plus. At select national retailers, US Cellular also introduced an exclusive 1GB plan for $35. Their press release makes no mention of who those retailers are, so that’s cool. If interested in US Cellular, the new prepaid plans are already live on their site . US Cellular Drops Price of Prepaid Unlimited Plan From $70 to $55 is a

Google took down 700,000 malicious apps in 2017, almost double the 2016 number

Image
It’s pretty hard to imagine how hard Google works to keep the Play Store secure. There are always malicious hackers up to no good and they are always trying to get their apps onto the Play Store. As these hackers have developed more and more ways to get by security measures, Google has had to step up and keep up with these new methods. By and large, we think they’re doing a good job. Google announced that it took down over 700,000 apps last year, all of which violated Google policies for the Play Store . This total is apparently 70% more than the number of apps taken down for the same reasons in 2016. Google has developed new detection models and techniques that can identify repeat offenders and abusive developer networks. Over 100,000 bad developers were banned from the Play Store in 2017, and Google has made it more difficult for these malicious developers to create new accounts and attempt to publish their bad apps. Also, Google revealed that it was able to take action faste

Samsung is Really Going to Release a Phone With a Foldable OLED Display This Year

Image
Samsung released its Q4 2017 earnings last night and they showed record profits. They crushed it in chips (memory, for example), but the mobile division performed well too, thanks to the Galaxy Note 8 . Since none of us really care about earnings reports, let’s talk about another bit of info that came out of the report: confirmation of a 2018 phone with a foldable OLED display. Samsung didn’t name-drop the upcoming phone or even tell us when exactly to expect it, but they mentioned twice that they have display panels that are foldable on the horizon and they’ll be used this year. Specifically, Samsung said that in their mobile business, they plan to differentiate smartphones by adopting “cutting-edge technologies, such as foldable OLED displays.” And again, this will happen in 2018. Galaxy X rumors and specs So far, the few rumors we’ve seen in reference to a Samsung phone with a foldable display are for the Galaxy X . And while I’d love to give you a whole bunch of concrete detail

Upcoming Meizu 15 Plus sighted in the wild again

Image
Meizu has been working on a new smartphone but we’re not sure if the Chinese OEM will launch it at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. We’re assuming it will since it did introduce a Super mCharge fast-charging solution last year. Before 2017 ended, a leaked Meizu 15 Plus image showed dual rear cameras. More images were leaked last week just before the official launch. There is no information on announcement or release but others are speculation it will roll out this coming February in time for the Spring Festival in China. Market release will probably be the following month. What’s believed to be the Meizu 15 Plus has been spotted once again. This time around, it’s live in action and not only a screenshot nor a patent illustration. The new images were posted on Weibo. The Meizu logo at the center of the rear panel appears to be blurred but you can see what looks like stickers of the logo on the table in the background. Expected as a premium Android phone, this one

The OnePlus 5T gets some awesome iPhone X-like gestures

Image
When the iPhone X was unveiled, one of the more surprising omissions was the fact that Apple was finally moving away from the home button. This was to help accommodate the new 5.7-inch display that Apple has implemented, and marked a move away from the boring slab design that has been around for years. However, the removal of the home button forced Apple to rethink the way users would navigate around the device, and the company has implemented a series of gestures for doing so. In the Android world, many devices use on-screen navigation buttons to combat the new trend of bezel-less phones, but OnePlus is looking at things a bit differently now. The company has released the latest OxygenOS Open Beta for the OnePlus 5T , which not only gets rid of the wonky, new clipboard manager but also adds some new navigation gestures similar to the iPhone X. These navigation gestures are activated when you swipe up from the middle-bottom edge of the device, which will take you back to the ho

Motorola rumored to have DSLR Moto Mods soon

Image
Motorola is still trying to get people to be excited for Moto Mods, and it’s been a few years now. Moto Mods – these modular accessories that connect to the Moto Z line of smartphones and give them more functionality – have been warmly received by a small modding community, and Motorola has even had great traction in putting out contests for new Moto Mods . Still, you get the feeling that this feature is not getting people excited enough to buy more Moto Z smartphones. But that could change in 2018. A source has informed our friends over at SlashGear that Motorola recently had a private event and among the devices presented was a Moto Mod that would support DSLR lenses from Sony, Canon, and Nikon. The source has also put this out on a Reddit thread , and judging from the discussions there, this Moto Mod would probably have its own camera sensor and not rely on the phone’s own camera. A Moto Mod that is essentially a DSLR alternative could be the boost that Motorola is waiting fo

Alcatel 5 flagship mid-range phone leaked before official launch

Image
TCL is starting the year with a new Android phone from the Alcatel 5 series. The Alcatel 5 is just one of the many devices lined up for this year. The brand will also release new phones from the Alcatel 1 and Alcatel 3 series. To be honest, these naming conventions are easier to remember now. To start with, The Alcatel 5 is a flagship offering but it’s only mid-range and not premium. It’s the first model from the Alcatel 5 line that will be introduced officially at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2018. The MWC 2018 will the launching pad of this phone with a bezel-less display. For this model, Alcatel reduced the bezel on the chin and not on any other side. The top bezel aka the forehead is quite big but the phone looks better than previous models. The curved side plus brushed back panel and chrome finish offer a high-end look. When it comes to specs, the Alcatel 5 sports a 5.7-inch HD+ IPS FullView display, 3GB RAM, 32GB onboard storage, microSD card slot for memory expansi
