Former Trump Campaign Aides Pushing For T-Mobile Sprint Deal

Former Trump campaign aides are pushing for the T-Mobile Sprint deal according to a new report, which points to the U.S.' third-largest wireless carrier getting some pretty big help that it just might need in order to get the merger approved. The former aides reportedly work for lobbying firm Turnberry Solutions LLC based in Washington, and there are three aides in total who were previously on the Trump campaign including Jason Osborne, Ryan O'Dwyer, and Mike Rubino. According to T-Mobile, it hired Turnberry and contracted the firm to lobby the Executive Office Of The President. The carrier reportedly made payments to Turnberry on two separate occasions which amounted to $30,000 and $70,000, in Q4 2017, and Q1 2018 respectively.

The report states that Turnberry's service was to consult T-Mobile on wireless industry issues, which isn't exactly a cut and dry description of lobbying for the merger but it would make for good timing with T-Mobile and Sprint having recently announced their plans for the merger just a few months after the second payment to Turnberry. Getting assistance with the deal would go a long way to help make approval more of a possibility.

For the deal to go through T-Mobile and Sprint need to get the green light from the FCC led by Ajit Pai, who was appointed to his position by President Trump. Having former Trump campaign aides, who might have just enough pull to do some convincing as to why the merger makes sense for the consumer, might have a positive impact, though it's still very unclear as to whether or not an approval looks good or not. The FCC is currently and has outspokenly been against AT&T's acquisition of Time Warner, so there is a good possibility that it could be against T-Mobile's acquisition of Sprint, too. The report states that T-Mobile approached Turnberry in August of last year, and rumors of a T-Mobile acquisition of Sprint have been floating around for at least that long.
