We asked, you told us: Android P will be called…

Android P is coming fast, with the developer preview already out, and we expect to know more about the confectionary-based name of the coming Android operating system upgrade during a keynote at Google I/O 2018.

Android has been released numerically and alphabetically ever since Android 1.5, or Cupcake. Since then, along with the numerical increment, there's been a name; a tasty sweet-treat that leaves enthusiasts (and journalists!) everywhere just a little hungry.

Here's a short and delicious trip down memory lane:

Previous Android version names (versions 1.0 and 1.1 didn't have release codenames):

    • Android 1.5 Cupcake
    • Android 1.6 Donut
    • Android 2.2 Eclair
    • Android 2.2 Froyo
    • Android 2.3 Gingerbread
    • Android 3.0 Honeycomb
    • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
    • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
    • Android 4.4 KitKat

  • Android 5.0 Lollipop
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow
  • Android 7.0 Nougat
  • Android 8.0 Oreo (current)

So what will Android P be named? There's not a completely obvious P dessert, sweet, or candy that leaps out to make a claim. History tells us Google isn't afraid to cross-license a popular snack, which they did for both Android 4.4 (KitKat) and Android 8.0 (Oreo), but even then, the choices are not easy. And we think Android (Reece's) Pieces is just a bridge too far.

The results:

We decided to ask as many of you as possible so we could get an accurate idea of the top two options from our Android community, putting it to you here on the website, on Twitter, and via our YouTube community poll. Together we amassed more than 46,000 votes, and here are the results (note that Twitter only allows four voting options):

The winner is … Android Peppermint!

Android Peppermint was a clear standout across all three votes. YouTubers gave Peppermint a fresh 46 percent of the vote, whereas Twitter fans were a little more divided, only giving Peppermint 31 percent. The battle for second was very tight, but Pancake managed to hold second in all three polls, just ahead of Popsicle and Pie, with opinion split over the better option for third or fourth.

We bundled everything we could think of for pie (Pecan, Pumpkin, Pineapple, Peach…) but at least one comment pointed out that Pineapple might not be exactly what Google will be going for. Anyone else remember when Key Lime Pie was going to be Android 4.4's name given that Kitkat would need licensing?

Spare a thought for Parfait, too, the clear loser on the day. Despite being one of the great versatile desserts, it managed just 3 percent of votes in the two polls that had it. The next time you're craving a multi-alternate-icecream-custard-syrup-fruit dessert, you'll be sorry!

But the winner Android Peppermint was our top performer, even if the comments told us just how many options Google have up their sleeve – from regional specialties like Australia/New Zealand's Pavlova to a sub-continental sweet dish in Pongal.

That second guy has a point. Quince? …Quality Street? The options are few!

Apple is postponing new iOS features in favor of reliability and performance

Apple has decided to postpone new features in iOS in favor of improving the reliability and performance of the operating system, as according to a report by Axios. According to the report, Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President, Software Engineering, announced the revised plan to employees at a meeting earlier this month. This pushes features like refresh of the homescreen and in-car user interface, improvements to core apps like Mail and camera experience to 2019. What we will get this year is improvements to AR, digital health and parental controls. Apart from that, the OS will largely feature improvements to performance and user experience. We have seen Apple do this with macOS in the past, where they dedicate one entire update cycle to just refining the OS and make existing features work better.
