OnePlus 5 and 5T get stable Android 8.1 update, 5T gains full-screen gesture support

  • After remaining in beta for almost three months, the OnePlus 5T's navigation gestures are available in the latest public release.
  • The gestures are akin to the iPhone X's, though they are not available for the OnePlus 5.
  • This update arrives as part of the stable OxygenOS 5.1.0 update, which also brings Android 8.1 Oreo to both devices.

Thanks to OnePlus' latest public release, the OnePlus 5T officially supports navigation gestures à la the iPhone X.

As with the beta releases, you can enable the gestures by going into settings and disabling the navigation bar. Gestures include swiping up from the middle to take you home and pausing for around a second after swiping from the bottom for recent apps. You can also swipe up from the left or right side of the screen to go back — a gesture that can be used interchangeably.

If you cannot remember the gestures, don't sweat it. You are shown a tutorial once you turn off the navigation bar, so you can always go back to it if you forgot a certain gesture.

Just remember that the gestures only work on the OnePlus 5T. We do not know if the OnePlus 5 will be updated with gesture support, but that is looking more unlikely with the passing months.

Gesture support for the 5T arrives as part of the stable release of OxygenOS 5.1.0, based on Android 8.1 Oreo. It's available now for both the 5 and 5T, and also brings the April 2018 security patch, new optimizations in gaming mode, and network priority for a gaming app in the foreground. Finally, the OnePlus 5 and 5T's launchers include category tags in the search section of the app drawer and automatically names folders based on category.

OnePlus will start a broader rollout of OxygenOS 5.1.0 in the coming days, so do not fret if you do not see the 766MB update right away.
