  • Android 8.0 Oreo update rolling out for Nokia 6 and Nokia 5.
  • HMD Global confirms phased rollout, starting in India.
  • 1.8 GB update includes new Oreo features, performance improvements, and January Android security patches.

HMD Global has been busy rolling out Android 8.0 Oreo to its current line-up over the past few months, with the Nokia 8, Nokia 7, and Nokia 6 (2018), all enjoying the major OS upgrade. Now, the Finnish company has started rolling out vanilla Oreo for the original Nokia 6 and the Nokia 5.

Chief product officer Juho Sarvikas confirmed the rollout on Twitter earlier today, proudly claiming that the two mid-range devices will now be “sweeter and smoother” thanks to Oreo’s additional feature-set.

In a follow-up tweet, Sarvikas noted that the rollout will be phased to “secure quality delivery”. Considering both phones have already been through a beta program, it shouldn’t be too long before all users receive the update.

Several Nokia 6 (TA 1021 model) users in India have already shared screenshots of the OTA update which carries the build number V5.220. The update weighs in at just over 1.8 GB and adds Picture-in-Picture mode, app notification dots, security improvements, and the January Android security patches.

HMD Global has done an admirable job of updating its Android roster in a timely fashion. Just yesterday, the firm confirmed that an Oreo beta for the Nokia 3 is “around the corner”, while the entry-level Nokia 2 will jump straight to Android 8.1 Oreo further down the line.

Meanwhile, the revived range’s de-facto flagship, the Nokia 8, is currently involved in an 8.1 Oreo beta.
